Fascinating

I don't care what anyone says, I love David Lynch's Dune — it maybe messy and sprawling and flawed but it's also full of haunting imagery, striking set design and sublime creativity. I saw it twice at the cinema when it was released, and own it on DVD. I told Lynch how much I liked the film when I met him in London in the mid-90s, although his reaction was one more of puzzlement and dismay, rather than gratitude for my singular critical judgment.

Ed Naha wrote what I remember as being an incisive making of book at the time of release, and this is a wonderful accompaniment to that now out-of-print tome, a fascinating peak behind-the-scenes from one of the film's stars, Sean Young. I do hope there's more to come...

Yeah, this clip was fascinating to watch and I quite enjoyed Sean Young's observations. It was so weird seeing all these big movie stars in a cafeteria together happily munching on their food.

I like DUNE as well. It may be something of a narrative mess but it is just so visually interesting to look at. Plus, it's failure led to Lynch's best film (IMO), BLUE VELVET. So, there's that, too.

That cafeteria moment is priceless.

And talking of Blue Velvet. When are we going to get a DVD/BR version that reflects the film's stunning cinematography?

Blimey. I wonder if she has similar footage from the set of Blade Runner?

@ Adam

Now there's a thought.

She's put other stuff up on youtube already...

Hey Mark,

I have a copy of the The Making of Dune by Ed Naha. I'm not a great fan of the film so if you'd like it let me know and maybe I could send it to your agent for you?

Also wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog!
Thanks,
Tim.

@ Tim

That's very kind of you to offer Tim, but I still have my original copy, which is sitting on the shelf behind me as I write this. And which I would very much like to read again some time soon, if only my pile of "books to read" wasn't so high already and threatening to topple over.

Thanks too for the kind words about the blog. Very glad you enjoy it. And please keep the comments coming. I like the feedback.

best
