This is not a proper review. Don't have time for that right now. But I just wanted to say that I went to the Up premiere in London yesterday and Pixar's tenth feature is up there (pun most definitely intended) with the best of their illustrious output. Right up there, in fact. Top three for me. Maybe even higher.
It is, quite simply, one of the most wonderful, spellbinding, emotional, funny, warm, moving experiences I've had in the cinema. I laughed. I cried. I wanted to see it again as soon as it was over. As of today, it's my favourite film of the year. There, I've said it. Go see, if you haven't already.

Wow - glad you enjoyed! I really, really liked it a whole lot, but it's not quite up there with a handful of other things I've seen this year, and I like a few other Pixar flicks just a little bit more, personally. But that's splitting hairs. That early montage, however, certainly troubled the tear ducts. Nice, unobtrusive utilisation of the stereoscopics, too.
There have been other films I've liked a real lot this year but nothing's made me feel the way Up did.
That said, I have still to see Where The Wild Things Are.
But it terms of Pixar, for me, Up is as good as the Toy Stories and The Incredibles.
You have to wait until forever for Wild Things too, right? December here. Fie on that.
I know exactly what you mean though. I found it really affecting. Went back a second time, in fact. Speaking of, I saw Ponyo again the other day, but took in the dub this time. Not a bad job at all.
Further on animation: do you have a release date for Mary and Max on your side yet?
Well, I'm hoping that as soon as WTWTA is released in the US they'll start screening here. That's normally what happens.
Meaning... soon-ish. Hopefully.
Nope, don't know about Mary And Max. Will find out though. You liked it a lot, right?
Very much. The bluray actually releases here in a fortnight. And we're Region B, too. If you fancy a parcel...
Suprised to see you put The Incredibles above Finding Nemo... discuss?
Really looking forward to seeing 'Up' after both your comments, might even travel up to London to see it at the BFI Imax!
@ Lloyd
Ok, confession time. I've never seen Finding Nemo. Don't know why. Just haven't. Really should. And I will. Be haven't. Yet.
There are some people who've never seen Citizen Kane. Or GoodFellas. Or A Matter of Life And Death.
Finding Nemo is my embarrassing cinematic omission.
Please do watch it, well up there with Toy Story in my list.
I'll also promise to sit down and watch Citizen Kane, always seen clips but never the film!
Don't worry, I intend to. It's a hole in my viewing that I intend to plug asap.
And Citizen Kane is amazing. The first time I saw it I was just blown away. By the visuals. By the audacity of the filmmaking. And by how much other directors had ripped it off over the years.
@ Gerard.
Is there an Australian Amazon or equivalent, then?
I can sort out a copy if you'd like. Be my pleasure, it would.
Thanks so much. That's awfully kind of you. I'm very touched.
But only if you're sure...
Most certainly. Might try and find one or two other local gems you might not have had the chance to catch and get them to you, too...
Cool. I'll drop you an email with my address.
And thanks again.
