It was just under a year ago that I reviewed Mexican screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga's impressive directorial debut The Burning Plain when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival, noting that it "packs a sizeable punch" and highlighting the performances of Charleze Theron, Kim Basinger and, in particular, newcomer Jennifer Lawrence, "all of whom should, by rights, find themselves nominated". Alas, that never happened. The film was given a cursory release in the UK back in March, earning a paltry £7349 according to The Daily Telegraph's David Gritten, and is out next week on DVD. It's fate Stateside looked uncertain for a while but is set for a September release through Magnolia. Who knows, perhaps the trio of leading might finally get their due.
