This has me excited as hell, and heck, I've been waiting for this film since I was about fourteen (so almost ten years)!
Love the snippet of 'Epiphany' we get, Depp looks brilliant in the role and everyone else look the parts from the brief glimpses we get, London looks gloriously dank and I really dig the 'Charlie & The Chocolate Factory'-esque colours of the flashback scenes. I just really bleeding wish that this was being marketed as the full-blown musical that it is! All we really get are a few lines from a song that's originally only partly sung anyway!
Hopefully they're hoping to blow us all away by keeping as very much as possible under wraps so as not to over-expose the film pre-release.
Also, trailer seems to downplay the whole cannibalism aspect.. are they afraid people won't come to an all-singing cannibalistic horror/revenge period Depp-Burton black comedy/drama or something? :P
I found it very good... but i was expecting a more "singing" trailer! Anyway, now i can't wait to see it, even if at the end it might be quite scary.... (the eyes of Johnny Depp and Helena Boham Carte, very well painted, are frigthening!).
not a musical geek and keeping mum till the film is out; but Sacha Baron Cohen is operetta villain and colorful and Alan Rickman and LM Kelly are worth mentioning; the chemistry between Depp and Carter is there, they look like diabolic siblings from the underworld; the characters' look certainly quotes cheap pictures of the 19th century and silent era films; but what are your thoughts, Mr Salisbury?
The first trailer was always going to be tricky, particularly in regard to how much singing, if any, it was going to show. I understand the decision to keep it (mainly) underwraps — this was but a mere tease after all — to preserve the surprise as much as possible, but I expect, as the release date nears, that they will release one with more singing. I thought Dante Ferretti's sets, the stunning cinematography, and the look of the actors (which, Lena, you correctly identify as silent movie era) were all amazing.
So you think we'll get another trailer closer to release? I thought this was *the* trailer, with the release being so near now and this trailer being about two and a half minutes. But then there are always TV spots etc...
The look of the film is incredible, and the score sounds lush, stunning. A few shots of Depp there actually reminded me a touch of the Somnambulist from The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari.
Seeing this made me wish I could come to this film cold purely as a Burton-Depp fan, without any prior Sondheim/Sweeney knowledge. I envy those who can be introduced to this marvellous show by this film. Imagine having Burton's take on 'A Little Priest' be the first time you'd ever heard the song or seen it performed!
Having said all that, great to see Depp's given Sweeney the accent - in my Sweeney experience, it's normally Lovett with the character voice whilst Sweeney only having something of a vaguely English accent - more about the singing, less about the accent. I get the feeling Depp may have acheived a rather excellent combination of the two. Really enjoyed his take on 'Epiphany' from the little we've been shown too!
I don't know for sure about there being another trailer — that's purely conjecture on my part, based on the fact that films seem to have more than one trailer nowadays, with some having as many as three. Also, the US release is late December and we're still only in early October, so who knows...
Absolutely incredible. I've been on tenterhooks waiting for the trailer for months, and it certainly hasn't disappointed. I love the colour (or lack of), love the sets, the cast look fantastic ... everything just looks perfect, and has me honestly believing this could be TB's greatest film yet. Like everyone else though, I just wish there was a smidge more singing...
The trailer left me speechless. Absolutely brilliant! I've watched it many times already and it just keeps getting better. I had high expectations, but the trailer just blew my mind. :D Well, not really surprising since we're dealing with Burton and Depp, two of my idols. Ah. I'm still in awe. Too bad the film won't be released here in Finland in December.
I'm not familiar with the original musical, I've just learned about it when I first heard Burton and Depp were going to make the film. Nevertheless, I'm very excited. I'm looking forward to seeing how they've managed to implement all the musical numbers in the dialogue. Judging by the small singing snippet, the transition from speaking to singing has been done flawlessly!
thank you for the opinion, Mr Salisbury; the sets are atmospheric, but the look of the actors is Colleen Atwood's creation; guess the trailer hints at the points Mr Burton accentuated and hides singing not to annoy musical fans and not to reveal R-rated scenes.
Certainly Colleen is once again costume designer, but for those responsible for Sweeney and Mrs Lovett's "silent movie" look see Sweeney Todd: The Visual Companion written by, well, me, and coming to a bookstore this December...

for the new readers that may venture back to this comment section, the reason you'll keep coming back to mark's blog is the honesty and knowledge that he brings to his reviews. i think what really drew me here was his genuine excitement for films. it wasn't like other movie blogs that review with a general disdain for the art or emotion of the piece.
i don't know if that makes any sense, but it's 9:20am and i STILL haven't had any coffee.

Brilliant to see that the film's earned an R rating in the US for 'Graphic Bloody Violence' according to the official site.

I actually found this blog in August through an exceptional Depp fansite/forum called the Johnny Depp Zone.
I agree with Schmid4Brains, I really like the style of the reviews and the excitement is very refreshing!
On a side note, Burton on Burton is a marvellous book! ;)
