Monday musing

American Gangster made $46.3 million at the US box office this weekend. That's incredible. Especially considering it's two plus hours long and R rated. Many of the reviews voiced the same "it's good, but..." as me, but the public spoke and went in their droves. Is it this year's The Departed? Only time will tell.

For some reason American Gangster doesn't really excite me. It looks very decent, but the trailer has an air of "seen it all before..." to it. But hell, $46.3 mil on opening weekend is insane.

And were you a fan of The Departed?

I thought some of the performances were outstanding, although I still prefer Infernal Affairs. It was leaner, shorter and the great morse code on cellphones simply got lost in translation in The Departed.

I really like The Departed a lot, and appreciate that it isn't just a direct blow-for-blow redo of Infernal Affairs (which I'll agree is a superior film). And yeah, the stuff with the cellphones really didn't come out the other end in tact, did it? Which was a real shame.

On another note, fianlly saw ...Jesse James... a few nights ago. One of the finest films I've seen this year. Absolutely loved it. When your biggest complaint with a film is that Brad Pitt didn't blink enough, I think you're onto something good.

We also finally got Death Proof down here, which I went and saw the next night. Entertaining as hell! The ending is priceless, too. I enjoyed it very much. Still raw that we never got to see Grindhouse here, though...
