Interesting column from Variety's Anne Thompson about the problems faced by many once hot directors now considered past their prime. Joe Dante's got a couple of films on the go, but I'd love to see Phil Kaufman get back behind the camera again.
I've had Youth Without Youth on DVD for almost a year but am afraid to watch it. Having said that, I LOVE The Conversation and will be hoping Santa brings me The Godfather Collection on Blu-ray this Christmas.
The Conversation is probably Coppola's best. Youth is atrocious-it's like Coppola has lived his career in reverse; pretentious art flick(Youth), director for hire studio gigs(Jack, Rainmaker,Dracula,Godfather 3), breakthrough maturity (Apocalypse), double whammy art & success(Godfather 1 & 2),crowning masterpiece(Conversation).
By that rational the next one (Tetro?) will be akin to a 1st year student film!
Well, Coppola is only going to produce ON THE ROAD, Walter Salles is directing.
I would love to see John Carpenter start cranking out films again. I heard that he is working on something now so maybe those MASTERS OF HORROR eps. he did, fired him up to get behind the camera for another feature-length.
I also really dig Kaufman's work. Just watched his take on INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS again and it really holds up and is very chilling, esp. that ending. I always loved THE RIGHT STUFF as well. A very underrated film in a lot of respects.
I think Kaufman's Body Snatchers is one of the very few remakes that deserves to be mentioned in the same breathe as the original. That and Carpenter's The Thing.

Don't forgot about his proposed adaptation of On The Road!
