For Last King Of Scotland director Kevin Macdonald. Russell Crowe has agreed to replace Brad Pitt in the US remake of State Of Play. Meaning the film doesn't fold and lots of great actors get to try and recapture the genius of David Yates' BBC TV version.
I'm pleased for Kevin who is not only a nice bloke and the brother of Sunshine producer Andrew, but also used to work at Faber and helped on the first edition of Burton On Burton (he gets a thank you in the original book's acknowledgments).

This is excellent news for the production, obviously, but you know what? I'm really bummed Pitt couldn't have wound up in this. At risk of offending both my nation and our Kiwi neighbours (:P), I am just plain not much of a Russell Crowe fan. Good actor, certainly, but I really don't find him nearly as engaging or interesting as Pitt's become.
Personally, when Brad left, I think they should have just gone for John Simm who starred in the original. I bet he can do an American accent...
I'm aware of the original but have never seen it. I'll have to track it down...
It's terrific. I missed the original TV airing and watched it on DVD. Two hours the first night, then the final four, one after another, the next.
