That Friday feeling

The Watchmen roadshow hit London this morning and I had the lucky task of chairing a Q&A with Zack Snyder and Dave Gibbons following the screening. The footage shown was the same as unveiled in LA and NY last month — it's fab by the way — plus the new trailer. Today was the second time I'd seen the footage — take my word for it, this is a going to be a BIG title on DVD, so dense and detailed is each frame. You can read Empire's report here.

How does Mr Snyder find time to travel around with 30 mins of his film? Shouldn't he be working on finishing it?
Have the studios settled their rights dispute over the Watchmen?

The purist in me is very disappointed that Snyder is not going with the "squid" ending. I can't see how he's going to get around fundamentally changing several of the characters' motivations as a result. Esp. if the rumored ending with Dr. Manhattan triggered explosions is what they've opted for instead.

Don't be too disappointed at the lack of the "squid" ending — fans are, I think, really going to love this. It's Watchmen but it's not. What I mean by that is that it's true to the spirit, to the essence of the source material, and you get images torn directly from Gibbons' pages, but Snyder has also embellished and added (certainly judging by the 20-30 minutes) some really cool and interesting stuff that makes it his version of Watchmen while also being "our" version. If that makes sense...

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I will definitely be going to see this when it comes out in theaters but I guess I will remain cautiously optimistic. I certainly like what I've seen so far. The latest trailer had some incredible footage and it was spooky to hear Rorschach finally speak.
