Let's play a game

I’m no fortune-teller, and this site clearly isn’t as obsessed with the Oscars as some out there. But with the nominations due tomorrow morning LA time, I thought it was worth sticking my neck out and offering up my predictions for the top six categories. With one point for each correct nomination, there’s a total of 30 points up for grabs. Please feel free to join in.

Best Film: There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men, Michael Clayton, The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, Juno [I hope I’m wrong and Sweeney’s included, but…]

Best Director: Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood), the Coen Brothers (No Country For Old Men), Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell And The Butterfly), Sean Penn (Into The Wild), Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd)

Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd), George Clooney (Michael Clayton), Tommy Lee Jones (In The Valley Of Elah), James McAvoy (Atonement)

Best Actress: Ellen Page (Juno), Julie Christie (Away From Her), Helena Bonham Carter (Sweeney Todd), Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose), Angelina Jolie (A Mighty Heart)

Best Supporting Actor: Casey Affleck (Jesse James), Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men), Hal Holbrook (Into The Wild), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Charlie Wilson's War), Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood)

Best Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett (I’m Not There), Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Marisa Tomei (Before The Devil Knows You're Dead), Saoirse Ronan (Atonement), Kelly Macdonald (No Country For Old Men)

Interesting choices. And too much competition this year. I really wanted to include Zodiac and maybe should have had Fincher as my wild card in Director...

Fincher is great for a wild card slot. I walked out of American Gangster more impressed with Ruby Dee than anything else. I don't think Denzel deserves it, but I think the Academy just may.

But then I hold grudges against the Academy far too numerous to list here, but my fav grudge is Supporting Actor going to Cuba Gooding Jr for Jerry Maguire over Edward Norton for Primal Fear. I thought the movie wasn't all that great, but Norton just stole your attention. He was stellar!

While I loved Jerry Maguire, I completely agree with you regarding Norton. He was sensational in that film.

PS. My biggest grudge of recent times was Crash picking up Best Picture...

What were they thinking?!

Interesting predictions! I'm only going to make my list of who I think wins and who I wish to win after they've actually announced the nominees. :D

But I'm rooting for Sweeney, Depp and Burton (obviously) to get nominated. And yeah, it'd be wonderful if Zodiac got some recognition, but unfortunately I don't see it happening.

Crash = overblown...

... And, shamefully, I haven't seen enough of this year's big releases to make any decent predictions. I've got a feeling American Gangster's going to feature, but if it's up for best film I'll be disappointed, I thought it was a bit dull. As dull as drugs and gangsters can be, obviously.

I will of course be adding my shouts of support for some Sweeney-lovin', though :D
