I've not yet seen The Spirit but judging by the reviews I'm not in any rush, particularly if I have to pay for it. Regular readers will know that I had been looking forward to it, although from the teaser onwards I began to have my doubts, a feeling not helped by all subsequent trailers. Then the reviews started to come in and, well, the general consensus is that it sucks, big time. Total Film (a magazine of which I'm a contributing editor) put it on the cover (presumably sight unseen) and devoted eight interior pages (plus many more before) of the Christmas 2008 issue to it. They were not the only ones burned. But the Total Film website has struck back, with this spot-on spoof For Your Consideration ad...

The Ebert quote is priceless! I'm intrigued enough by the visuals to want to see the film but I'll leave it until I find the dvd in the bargain bins. Seems Miller has entirely misjudged the tone of the piece while professing to be the only man able to do justice to Eisner's work. Here's hoping it ges nearer the mark with Buck Rogers, although I get the feeling that the world's darkest comic book auteur has found a new niche making the world's campest comic book movies!
I agree ebert quote is priceless.
film trailers
i'm sorry... but did no one see "Surfer, Dude"??? i've watched a lot of bad movies in my day and i've always made it all the way through to the end of them... i could not last 30 minutes of this crap. the spirit at least looks visually interesting.
A friend of mine saw "Surfer, Dude" and put it on her worst of 2008. I had never even heard of it.
Anyway, that Ebert quote really is fantastic.
I'd never heard of Surfer, Dude either till this thread.
And agreed, re the Ebert quote. A majestic put down.
